Where Our Center Comes From — The Sera Jey Lineage in Jakarta

When you step into our center in Jakarta Garden City, you are stepping into a tradition that reaches back across generations and continents — all the way to a monastery in South India that is home to more than three thousand monks. This week we would like to share where our center comes from.

A Monastery in South India

Sera Jey Monastery is one of the great centers of Tibetan Buddhist learning. Home to over 3,000 monks, it upholds the Gelugpa tradition through intensive study, prayer, and compassionate service, playing a vital role in preserving the teachings of the Buddha and supporting practitioners around the world. The monks there devote decades to study, memorization, and debate, so that the Dharma passes from teacher to student in an unbroken line.

Our center in Jakarta is officially affiliated with Sera Jey Monastery. We are, in a sense, one small window opening onto that vast house of learning — a bridge between ancient wisdom and everyday life here in Indonesia.

Our Resident Geshes

The word Geshe is a title given to a monk who has completed the highest qualification of the Gelug monastic curriculum — a degree earned not in a few years but over decades of study in the Sera Jey tradition. Two resident teachers guide practice at our center:

  • Geshe Jangchub Chomphel — resident teacher, Gelug tradition
  • Geshe Dhadoen — resident teacher, Gelug tradition

They lead our weekly prayers, pujas, and Dharma teachings, and they warmly welcome both newcomers and long-time practitioners. You do not need any experience to sit with them; you only need to come.

What This Means for You

Being affiliated with Sera Jey Monastery means the prayers, practices, and rituals offered here are authentic — carried directly from the source, in an unbroken line, and inspired by the teachings of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. When you offer a butter lamp, dedicate a name at a puja, or simply sit quietly in the shrine room, you are joining a current of practice far older and wider than any one of us.

May the teachings of the Buddha long remain, and may all who enter here find peace, wisdom, and compassion.

You are always welcome. Our weekly prayers are every Saturday at 2:00 PM, and the center is open daily from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM for offerings and quiet practice. Find us at Ruko Savoy Blok C1 No. 31 & 32, Jakarta Garden City, or message us on WhatsApp at +62 813 2488 4241.
