On the 15th day of the 7th lunar month — Chit Gwee Pua — Buddhists across Asia turn their hearts toward those who have passed, and toward every wandering being who has no one to remember them. At Sera Jey Wisdom Center we gather for Chau Tu (中元普渡), a ceremony of universal deliverance, on Wednesday, 27 August 2026.
What is Chau Tu?
Chau Tu belongs to the same family of observances as the Ullambana festival. Its heart is simple: through prayer, the offering of lamps and food, and the power of compassion, we help the spirits of the departed — our own ancestors and those with no one left to care for them — find relief from suffering, peace, and a fortunate rebirth.
In the Gelug tradition the ceremony is led by our Geshes, who recite the prayers, make the offerings on behalf of everyone present, and dedicate the merit. The names written on tablet paper are read and blessed during the puja.
Why it matters
- Gratitude. We owe our lives to countless beings — parents, grandparents, ancestors we will never meet. Chau Tu is a day to repay that kindness with prayer.
- Compassion without limits. The ceremony does not stop at our own family. It reaches every being who is suffering and forgotten. This is what “universal deliverance” means.
- Impermanence. Remembering the departed reminds us, gently, that our own time is precious — and that every act of generosity is a light we can carry.
How to take part
1. Dedicate a name — free
Until 26 August, you may submit the names of loved ones: the living, for long life, health and safety; or those who have passed. Each name is written on tablet paper and blessed by Geshe, at no charge. Register a name here, or come to the center any day between 8 AM and 7 PM.
2. Make an offering
If you wish, you can support the ceremony with an offering — a lamp, fruits, flowers, a sangha offering, or any amount. When you make your offering you can add the names you wish to dedicate and any intention you hold in your heart. Make an offering for Chau Tu.
3. Come and join us
Everyone is welcome on 27 August — no registration, no experience needed. Sit with us, offer a lamp, and dedicate the merit to those you love.
“May the light of these lamps guide all wandering beings to a realm of happiness and peace.”
