A Seat Prepared for the Teachings

We are commissioning two hand-carved shrine thrones and six chokchi offering tables from the Tibetan carving workshop of Lopsang in Nepal — the taller throne for His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the second for Khen Rinpoche, our Chief Abbot.

A throne is not furniture. It is the seat we prepare for the teachings, kept ready whether or not anyone is sitting on it — the Centre’s way of saying that the Dharma has a place here. Ours have been carved and painted entirely by hand: a garuda crown, gold dragon brocade, snow lions and atlas figures around the base, on a three-tier stepped platform.

What Is Being Made

The workshop’s quotation, converted to Rupiah, with each piece carrying its share of the flight home — the thrones, being far the bulkier, carry almost all of it. Nothing here is an estimate except the shipping, which is marked as such.

The workshop quotes in Nepali Rupees. We have converted at Rp 118 per NPR — slightly above the market rate, so that a shift in the exchange rate before we pay the workshop cannot leave the Centre short. Shipping is air freight from Kathmandu, estimated at about US$6,000. We have divided it by the space each piece takes in the crate rather than by its price — the thrones are far bulkier than the tables and carry almost all of it, so that a chokchi table stays within a family’s reach. We will publish the real figure once the forwarder confirms it. If every piece finds a sponsor, the project is fully funded, shipping included. Anything not needed stays with the Centre for the shrine room.

The low carved tables that stand before the thrones, where offerings are laid. Rp 6.000.000 each, shipping included — barely more than the workshop’s own price, because the thrones carry the freight. A whole, named object within reach of a family.

Rp 250.000 buys gold leaf. Rp 1.000.000 covers a hand’s breadth of carving. Nothing is too small — the thrones are being built by many hands and many gifts.
